Community Meeting

Self Storage Zone is looking to occupy 2800 8^th Street N.E.

The lot is currently occupied by O’Donnell Construction Company.

If Self Storage Zone occupies the lot, they will be applying to have a curb-cut for entrance/exit points at the property. The curb-cut application has to be approved by the District of Columbia. However, community input must be considered before being approved/denied.

Please come out and view the presentation and give input on the Self Storage Zone application.

Brookland Park Apartments – As noted previously, the ownership of the property has changed hands. Jair Lynch Development has taken ownership. They’ve brought on Keptler Management to assume on-site management duties. Their plans are to do upgrades to the property. The residential use will remain at the “affordable” rate of 60% or less of the Average Median Income (AMI) in the D.C. area. Brookland Park residents are in talks with management about upgrades to the facility. There has been a list of requests compiled and the development team plans to complete all upgrades by the end of 2012. Area residents at the meeting expressed concerns about façade improvements, in particular, the rusted fences. I’ve contacted the development team and there are plans to complete that request.

Updates from Mayor Gray’s Office of Neighborhood Engagement – Carl Thomas represents the Ward 5 Office of Neighborhood Engagement for the Mayor. Carl spoke to residents about his roles and responsibilities. In summary, he is the liaison between the community and the Mayor. Constituent concerns and issues that fall under the Mayor’s purview are reported to the Office of the Mayor by Carl. He also coordinates with District agencies to respond to requests for city services from residents. Carl can be reached at carl.thomas@dc.gov or (202) 340-7141.

The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) – Sharon Cooke, Chief, Office of Community Relations for DDOE presented information on programs and initiatives put in place by the city to create cost-saving opportunities for residents. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) – Connie Wheeler represents the Transportation Operations Administration segment of DDOT. She oversees operations in Ward 5-8. She responded to concerns about construction traffic along 7^th Street. We are currently working to include The Metropolitan Police Department as much as possible to increase enforcement. She noted the addition of a 4-way stop light at 4^th & Douglas Streets, N.E. She is also continuing to assess the area for increased traffic calming measures. She also mentioned that parking along 7^th Street between Lawrence and Monroe could potentially have parking meters for patrons of WMATA. I’ve taken note of all of the requests of residents at the meeting and sent an email to Connie to follow up on the matters. Please send any additional matters to me via email. The follow-up meeting with WMATA will take place on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 6:30 pm.

The meeting will be held at the Baptized Believers Temple, which is located at 2801 7th Street, N.E.

This meeting will serve as a follow-up on the discussion at the last meeting. The drafted proposal of the new distancing between bus stops and any additional community input will be discussed. Since this draft, I have spoken with WMATA officials and another draft is being drawn that will potentially install more of the removed stops for convenience. This is based on the terrain of the community along with density due to multi-unit residences and apartments. As more details come forth, I will post them here.

3/2/11 — DC Water Announces Town Hall Meetings
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Beginning this month, The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) will partner with District Councilmembers to host town hall meetings in every ward of the District. In these meetings, General Manager George S. Hawkins and staff will address future water and sewer projects and issues facing local communities.

For the first time this year, General Manager Hawkins recorded a personal invitation to customers that will go out by automated phone call. The calling list includes all those who have contacted DC Water with questions or concerns within the last year.

“I feel it is important for DC Water, and me personally, to go into the communities we serve,” said DC Water General Manager George S. Hawkins. “We want to talk to all of our customers and others who we affect with our work. The team and I will also be ready to talk about upcoming construction projects, including the benefits and any possible disruptions.”

Meetings will be held in each ward and feature information on water quality, construction projects, employment, and customer service. Experts will be on hand to discuss water and sewer rates, drinking water, infrastructure, and efforts to help clean local rivers. The DC Water Board of Directors will hold a public hearing regarding the 2012 proposed rates at a location to be determined.
